How are Asphalt Millings Reused / Recycled?

by | Dec 22, 2023 | Recycled Asphalt Millings

Asphalt millings are one of the most recycled materials in the US. Asphalt millings are a great byproduct of milling a damaged asphalt surface to remove a layer of asphalt before repaving over the original foundation or base.

The process of asphalt milling consists of a machine that essentially goes over the asphalt surface with a grinding mechanism that grinds the asphalt to the desired depth. The asphalt that is ground and removed, is composed of small rock like pieces of asphalt, similar to gravel.

Asphalt millings have two main uses:

Reused in New Asphalt

Asphalt millings can be hauled away from a job site and taken back to an asphalt plant. From there the asphalt goes through a screening and sizing process where it is prepared to use in a new batch of hot asphalt mix. In many cases, asphalt mix made with recycled material is considered to be stronger and an overall better mix than asphalt made out of non recycled asphalt.

Asphalt Millings Can be Used Instead of Gravel

Another common way that people use milled asphalt is by using it for driveways instead of gravel. When properly laid and installed, asphalt millings can provide a great driveway with room for water to easily seep through to the ground below. On top of this, overtime asphalt millings will bond and harden, creating a great surface for a driveway where paved asphalt is not a necessity.
